Sri Gurusaday Dutt bought a huge plot of land before his death in 1941 and nomenclature the same as “ Bratachatigram” ( Bratachari Village) on the outskirts of Kolkata. His grandiose collection of approximately 2500 artefacts was entrusted to a committee, and posthumously a part of it was built into a museum of folk art in 1961.Called Gurusaday Museum, it showcases Dutt’s varied collections and is also a testament to the Hindu- Muslim unity of undivided Bengal through folk art that he upheld throughout his life. The museum was built after Sri Dutt’s death.it hoses his collections that are now nearly on the verge of extinction.
Archaeological and objects made of clay, musical instruments, pats, woodcarvings, kanthas, moulds for sweets and preserves, masks, puppets, toys and textiles are all part of this collection. The collection is nonpareil and of immense value to the culture and heritage of Bengal.
The museum is in the face of certain challenges which we will hopefully overcome in the near future. The Bengal Bratachari Society is striving hard to cope with and solve these challenges so that the museum is able to shine in its glory . Bratacharigram is a testament to a village boy’s love for his motherland.
